The name of Chsinau city comes from the archaic Romanian word chi?la (meaning "spring", "source of water") and nou? ("new"), because it was built around a small spring. Nowadays, the spring is located at the corner of Pushkin and Albi?oara streets.
Chisinau is also known in Russian as Kishinyov. It is written Kisinöv in the Latin Gagauz alphabet. It was also written as in the Moldovan Cyrillic alphabet in Soviet times. Historically, the English language name for the city, "Kishinev," was based on the modified Russian one because it entered the English language via Russian at the time Chi?in?u was part of the Russian Empire (e.g. Kishinev pogrom). Therefore, it remains a common English name in some historical contexts. Otherwise, however, the Romanian-based "Chisinau" has been steadily gaining wider currency, especially in the written language.

Abaixo, um pequeno texto meu sobre o filme, escrito para o Cinequanon.art.br, na ocasião do Anima Mundi 2006:
The Aroma of Tea (Holanda, 2006, cor, 3'20") de Michael Dudok de Wit -- Panorama 2
O filme mais ousado deste Anima Mundi só poderia ser obra de Dudok de Wit, autor dos geniais e premiadíssimos "O Monge e o Peixe" (1994) e "Pai e Filha" (2000). Em "O Aroma do Chá" ele mantém sua característica de sincronizar a música - do compositor barroco Arcangelo Corelli - com as imagens, mas desta vez forçando um tanto mais no minimalismo narrativo e estético, resultando num filme hipnótico e altamente contemplativo. O tempo para apreciação de cada cenário é respeitado como em raras vezes (lembro aqui de Abbas Kiarostami). Na verdade, são pinturas feitas com chá, daí a origem do título. Belíssimas telas, diga-se de passagem -- no mesmo naipe das aquarelas de "O Monge e o Peixe" e do carvão de "Pai e Filha". Em tempos de glorificação das elaboradas animações em 3D, Dudok de Wit pega a contra-mão e, optando pela simplicidade, chega próximo do que seria uma "animação 1D". É um filme tão singular que foi programado fora de competição, no subestimado Panorama -- cujas sessões terão uma única projeção em São Paulo. (Por Fábio Yamaji)
